Before moving to New Orleans, one of my favorite thing to do when visiting was to enjoy a fresh Hubig's Pie. Dorky, I know but they're delicious and they're so New Orleans. You can find them in just about every grocery store or convenience store in the city so if you're here, you've GOT to try one.
They come in all sorts of delicious flavors: Apple, Lemon, Peach, Pineapple, Chocolate, Coconut and sometimes the seasonal flavors: Strawberry, Blueberry, Sweet Potato, Cherry, and Banana. YUM!
The company actually started in Texas but after struggling through the depression, only the New Orleans location survived. To read more about the history of the company, visit their website.
I love how the package design is so out of date... but that's how I see New Orleans. Instead of updating, remodeling and redesigning with every new trend, the city embraces the history and therefore preserves it's identity, culture and uniqueness. If they changed the package design the pies would surely taste different.
Okay, off my soap box and on to the good stuff...
Ohhh yeahhhh....
The crust is thick and a perfect balance between flakey and cakey... plus there's that nice thick layer of icing over the WHOLE thing.
It had been so long since I've had one that I went with the classic Apple filling. Eat them room temperature or microwave for 20 seconds. Either way, they're heaven.
If you don't live in the area, don't fret, they ship pies! (just like it says on every package)
A freshness date is stamped on the back of every pie... just don't let your eyes wander down to the nutrition facts. It might ruin the experience.
I live in the U.K, so this was a novel read for me. We don't have anything like this in the U.K. Our pies tend to be savoury.
